OptiClip TERRA by Sylvania

The OptiClip TERRA by Sylvania, an office light made from cardboard, has won a GREEN Build Back Better Award in the 2024 lighting category.

The OptiClip TERRA combines replaceable light sources with luminaire housings made from recycled/recyclable materials, particularly cardboard.

This innovative initiative was a collaborative effort involving Sylvania’s top specialists and external cardboard production experts.

The company’s goal was to create a product that is environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, user-friendly, and of high quality.

Transforming cardboard from a packaging material into robust, office-suitable light fixtures posed significant challenges, requiring rigorous testing and multiple design iterations.

Sylvania says aimed to meet user expectations and stringent European standards.

The OptiClip TERRA frame is made from certified sustainable paper, 60 per cent of which is recycled. It is folded, not glued, and 100 per cent recyclable. Manufactured at the Sylvania Group plant in Saint Etienne, France, OptiClip TERRA incorporates several innovations designed to enhance its environmental friendliness.

Its instruction sheet is printed directly at the back of the product to reduce the need for additional paper.

Similarly, to minimise the use of protective film, the luminaires are grouped in sets of four and packaged in a certified sustainable carton printed with ecological ink.

The protective film used is also certified as sustainable and is fully recyclable. OptiClip TERRA’s LED modules can be replaced without tools, and the fixing clips are also 100 per cent recyclable.

The production of a luminaire made of paper emits 80 per cent less CO2 than its steel manufactured equivalent.

Its light weight allows a 40 per cent CO2 saving when transported (vs metal frame luminaire equivalent).

OptiClip TERRA has a glare rating of UGR<19 and a luminous efficacy of up to 127 lm/W.

The two removable LED modules means that replacement is simple. It has a rated life of 60,000 hours and is guaranteed for five years
