The Tridonic Multichannel OTD driver has been won a Build Back Better GOLD Award in the 2025 lighting category for its contribution to the reduction of light pollution.
Light pollution is leading to a situation where night time skies can no longer be enjoyed, with the stars barely visible. This is caused by artificial lighting that is too bright, and has already led to the permanent absence of complete darkness in some areas.
In the long-term, this has harmful effects on people, nature and animals.
Tridonic has addressed this, through the introduction of the multichannel outdoor solution, a dual channel LED driver for outdoor lighting. Thanks to the adaptive lighting solution, light pollution can be reduced while maintaining high levels of safety.
The combination of a two-channel driver with a Tunable White LED module and dynamic lighting control makes it possible to adapt the lighting completely to match any requirement, adjusting both the light intensity and colour temperature.
The colour temperature ranges between 2000K and 4000K, dimming the lighting levels to change from 100 per cent down to 1 per cent, or completely off when no light is required.
Alternatively, the two channels can be used to define two separate lighting zones and illuminate them with different settings. For example, it’s possible to illuminate footpaths and cycle paths with a higher light intensity than the streets at night.
Dynamic adaptation of light colour allows entire streets and cities to align with the natural circadian rhythm. Warm-white, dimmed light is ideal early in the morning and late in the evening to minimise the effects of light pollution in urban areas.
Furthermore, lighting is only provided at night when it is really needed. When there are no people around, the luminaires automatically switch to a warm, dimmed light, significantly reducing the environmental impact compared to bright, cool light colours.
Combining two drivers in one housing also offers more functions at a lower cost, with less space required and less complexity.
The standard solution can be enhanced by choosing lighting controls. Such as basicDIM Wireless outdoor node and PIR sensor.
The Multichannel Outdoor solution is a valuable contribution to environment by reducing by the ‘g-value’ and delivering better outcomes according to the Bortle Scale.
Given that glare can negatively impact wildlife by disrupting their habitats and natural behaviours, Tridonic has recognised the importance of manufacturing lighting solutions that address this. And, by delivering darker skies that move the Bortle Scale closer to 1 (darkest skies) not only will stars and celestial objects be much clearer to see, the impact on wildlife is reduced.
