HAWK3

Lucy Zodion

The next-generation HAWK3 photocell from Lucy Zodion has won a Build Back Better GREEN Award in the 2025 lighting category.

The judges say it represents a fundamental rethink of photocell design, informed by extensive consultation with local authorities, contractors and asset owners.
Their feedback was clear: they needed greater switching accuracy, lower energy consumption and stronger sustainability credentials.
For decades, the street lighting sector has relied on BS 5972, a standard first published in 1980, a time when low-pressure sodium dominated and environmental performance wasn’t a consideration.
Forty-five years later, LEDs, smart city integration and net-zero targets have transformed expectations, but the standard hasn’t caught up.
HAWK3 bridges that gap. This high-precision digital photocell delivers unmatched switching accuracy, consistent lux-level performance, and optimised burn hours, reducing unnecessary energy use and enabling consumption as low as 0.1W.
Its frosted cone design enhances light dispersion, minimises false switching from nearby obstructions and eliminates shadowing caused by internal components.
Sustainability was built into HAWK3 from the ground up. Its simplified architecture uses fewer components and less material, supporting a cradle-to-cradle approach and easier disassembly at end-of-life.
Laser marking replaces adhesive labels and ink ribbons, eliminating waste and contamination, while moulded gaskets improve durability and minimise moisture ingress.
Importantly, HAWK3 is designed to last. With a product life that aligns with modern LED lifecycles, it supports circularity and reduces landfill waste.
Fully recyclable construction remains the goal and full testing is underway to verify figures.
HAWK3 also enhances usability for engineers, with coloured identification bands, a clip-fit cone and compatibility with both 3-pin and 5/7-pin NEMA sockets — making integration into existing infrastructure seamless.
By delivering better energy efficiency, improved recyclability, and robust performance, HAWK3 redefines what a photocell can deliver, with a design shaped by user needs and built for long-term sustainability.
