The client approached Light Projects Evolve with a brief to upgrade the central high-pressure sodium lights – which colour shifted over their lifetime – to new LED.
The upgrade had to appear the same as the original lighting as much as possible, save energy and reduce maintenance.
To do this Light Projects Evolve took all the information about the light source and turned it into an advanced LED and wireless controls solution.
To make the new install look like the original SON lamps, glass shades for the LEDs were hand blown in Cambridge.
As there was only about 80mm diameter to fit the light source in, Light Projects Evolve chose three Cree LED chips with around 4000 lumens each with a colour temperature of 2200K. Both of these values closely match the SON source and the end result is you can’t tell between the old and new lighting.
Standard LED chips were chosen so that they could be maintained for the coming decades. Each LED has its own driver. The light source originally was on/off SON lamps with an average life of 36,000 hours which has been upgraded to LED with an average life of 100,000 hours.
Colour rendering has been increased form CRI 60 to CRI 80 which means colours are more realistic.
Light output has been increased by 15 per cent whilst energy has been reduced by 55 per cent.
The lights have also been upgraded with the latest Bluetooth wireless system which allows the lighting to be dimmed late at night and for special events. Time scheduling means the lighting is dimmed further from midnight to 6am to reduce energy by a further 50 per cent.
As this is a public walkway the lights are never turned off and operate all year round so the energy savings over the old lighting is huge.
The Bluetooth controls allows the client to monitor DALI2 energy information about actual energy usage for all the lights.
It also allows the client to adjust the lighting for special events and change the time scheduling should they wish. Installing high quality standard parts gives the customer peace of mind for decades to come.
