Holophane’s Pebble™ – which has been developed to redefine expectations of people-focused outdoor lighting by combining adaptable optical performance, visual comfort and circular product design – has won a Build Back Better GOLD Award in the 2026 lighting category.
Innovation lies in Pebble's adaptable optical architecture, which enables individual optical assemblies to be configured to influence the overall light distribution of the luminaire.
Combined with Holophane's Comfort Optic, this creates a controlled luminance profile that delivers precise optical performance while improving the visual experience of the luminaire.
Unlike conventional fixed-configuration outdoor luminaires, Pebble provides one adaptable platform capable of supporting multiple applications. The originality of this technology is recognised through a European patent application.
Creativity is demonstrated through Pebble's customer-led development. Rather than relying solely on internal assumptions, Holophane undertook an extensive Voice of Market programme involving consultants, contractors and electrical engineers.
The research confirmed that visual comfort would add genuine value, provided it did not compromise optical performance or energy efficiency. These findings directly influenced the product's optical system, architectural form and adaptable platform, ensuring Pebble was designed around genuine market needs rather than perceived ones.
Social purpose is at the heart of Pebble's design. Outdoor lighting should do more than illuminate a space; it should improve how people experience it. Pebble's Comfort Optic reduces the harsh appearance of exposed LED light sources, creating visually comfortable environments that help people move confidently through pathways, plazas, campuses and public spaces while maintaining the lighting performance required for safe navigation.
Environmental leadership is delivered through circular design principles. Pebble has been developed with a serviceable architecture, replaceable Optical Pod and accessible components that support maintenance, repair and longer product life.
Its adaptable platform reduces dependence on multiple dedicated product variants while helping preserve the value of the installed luminaire. Designed to support TM66 circularity goals, Pebble is currently being evaluated for submission to the LIA TM66 certification scheme.
