return to reuse

Future Designs

Future Designs end-of-life scheme for luminaires has won a Build Back Better GREEN Award in the 2025 lighting category.

Designed to set new standards for circularity in the built environment, the fully traceable recycling and reuse service ensures that every component of our luminaires is responsibly managed, providing clients with transparency and accountability throughout the disposal process.
In an innovative, meticulous, step-by-step process Future Designs will either reuse under the carbon careful™ initiative or recycle every component where possible of the retired lighting fixtures. Any Future Designs VANE luminaires that have been installed in a project within the past 12 years will be eligible.
The scheme redefines refurbishment by transforming discarded luminaires. With embedded QR codes on all new products, Future Designs enables long-term product tracking.
The modular design of VANE is easily adaptable, allowing lighting systems to be reconfigured for new environments rather than discarded, demonstrating creative engineering that extends product lifecycles.
Refurbishment projects often generate unnecessary waste, sending reusable fittings to landfill.
return to reuse directly addresses this issue, helping clients meet sustainability targets, reduce environmental impact and demonstrate accountability.
By removing uncertainty and offering a trusted afterlife storage and recycling pathway, the scheme creates measurable social value through waste reduction and sustainable practice.
With more than 730 kilometres of VANE luminaires installed across the UK, the environmental potential of this initiative is transformative.
Manufactured from aluminium and mild steel, both reusable, VANE was chosen as the first qualifying system due to its scale, flexibility, and sustainability credentials.
Every unusable component is directed to certified recycling partners, closing the loop and preventing landfill.
Full documentation of each recycled material demonstrates compliance with the highest environmental standards.
